2019 WasteCalc Introduction:

Welcome to the Florida Waste Composition Calculation Model (WasteCalc), a user-friendly tool to estimate the composition of municipal solid waste (MSW) generated in Florida counties. The composition data generated by WasteCalc should prove useful for annual reporting purposes, as well as solid waste and recycling program planning.

WasteCalc was originally funded through a Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) innovative recycling grant, and was developed by Pinellas County, Franklin Associates, and Kessler Consulting in 2000. The University of Florida has updated the model by changing the estimation methods for some materials and utilizing US EPA waste generation data and waste composition data from Florida counties to provide more accurate MSW material composition results.

2019 WasteCalc Model

The 2018 WasteCalc model uses the same technique as the original WasteCalc model. It is used to estimate the percent MSW composition in a county’s waste stream by using waste composition study data and US EPA generation data. The waste composition studies used were completed after 2002. The US EPA data was updated using the Characterization of Municipal Solid Waste in the United States: 2015 Update report, the most recent publishing. This is the most up-to-date model.
